Molotov launches 7 FAST channels*

Paris, May 16, 2022

The launch of FAST channels (or free ad-supported streaming TV channels) is part of the platform's strategy to grow its audience and advertising revenues with its AVoD model

_1652969092_CP_MOLOTOV_FAST_EN.jpeg*Free Ad Supported TV

Molotov announces the launch of 7 thematic FAST channels (Free Ad Supported Television financed by advertising), from its AVoD MANGO offer, its free video on demand service financed by advertising:

  • Mango

  • Mango Séries

  • Mango Cinéma

  • Mango Kids

  • Mango Docs

  • Mango Histoires

  • Mango Novelas

Molotov has developed a proprietary technology for linearizing on-demand content, enabling better discoverability and integration of user data.

With the rise of connected TV (CTV), FAST channels represent the future of free-to-air television and give both viewers and advertisers the ideal combination of the audience's linear viewing habits coupled with the advantages of digital advertising.

This type of content consumption provides a different experience for users who prefer content suggestions rather than spending time searching for content on the on-demand offerings.

The development of the AVoD offer and FAST channels is one of Molotov's priorities for 2022 with the integration of new content and new channels.

Molotov, the #1 TV streaming platform launched in France in 2016, joins fuboTV (NYSE: FUBO), the leading US TV streaming platform for live TV and sports programs, becoming the European hub of the group's operations. JeanDavid Blanc, founder of Molotov, remains president of the company and also becomes Chief Strategy Officer.

Molotov, France’s first OTT television streaming platform, announces a milestone in its development by joining the US group fuboTV Inc. (NYSE: FUBO), the leading US TV streaming platform for live TV and sports programs.

The operation is carried out through the acquisition of Molotov by fuboTV in the form of a cash and share transaction for an amount of $190 million (164.3 M€). The acquisition is subject to customary requisite approvals and closing conditions. It is estimated to close sometime during the first quarter of 2022.

The objective is to allow the deployment of a global platform on the two continents and internationally, Molotov being destined to become the European hub of the operations of the group.

Molotov will remain chaired and managed by its founder president JeanDavid Blanc, who is also appointed Chief Strategy Officer. The company, based in Paris and already made up of around a hundred people, intends to expand in order to become a development hub for the group.

“We are proud of this new step for Molotov. We share with fuboTV the same ambition and the same vision of a live TV streaming platform on both sides of the Atlantic. Our goal is to offer consumers a best-in-class streaming experience with premium television content on a global scale“, explains JeanDavid Blanc, founder and president of Molotov.

“Molotov has established itself as the benchmark for streaming television programs, financed by advertising or by subscription“, adds David Gandler, co-founder and CEO of fuboTV. “We are convinced that this strategic acquisition will help make fuboTV a global platform with strong operational leverage, a one-of-a-kind platform for all sports fans and their families.“

David Gandler adds: “With Molotov, we intend to continue to work toward providing users around the world with a truly one of a kind TV streaming experience, unheard of in its category.“

Molotov has distinguished itself with an extremely innovative experience, which has won numerous awards, focused on the distribution of live, catch-up and on-demand television programs.

With a mission to provide the world’s most thrilling sports-first live TV experience through the greatest breadth of premium content, interactivity and integrated wagering, fuboTV is focused on bringing to life its vision of a streaming platform that transcends the industry’s current virtual MVPD model.

Molotov operates in France and Burkina Faso, Ivory Coast, Senegal, Cameroon, and soon in the Democratic Republic of Congo, as well as in Morocco with Maroc Telecom. FuboTV currently operates in the United States and Canada and was the first American virtual MVPD to enter Europe with its launch in Spain in 2018.

The Molotov app is now available on Microsoft XBOX consoles. Gamers can enjoy the platform on the XBOX ONE and XBOX SERIES X/S models.

Today, gaming consoles are key entertainment devices in many homes. They are no longer just used for gaming, but also for consuming video entertainment. Gaming consoles have become an important substitute to Blu-ray players and other set-top devices (such as Apple TV, Xiaomi Box, Fire TV Stick, Chromecast etc...).

Whether for playing or streaming, Microsoft’s latest generation of consoles is taking video quality and sound quality, thanks to Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos, to a whole new level. Molotov users will benefit from those technological advances, especially when watching 4K programs*.

After downloading the app via the Microsoft store, users can find Molotov in the My Games & Applications section of the interface. While it is possible to connect or create a Molotov account on XBOX, subscription to a paid option must be done on Molotov's website or mobile application de Molotov.

Molotov offers XBOX users all the richness and simplicity of its platform, with more than 30,000 hours of live, replay and on-demand programs available at any given time.

Molotov is the only application on XBOX offering free access to 38 TV channels, including all DTT channels, as well as MANGO (its new AVoD service launched last November), as well as catch-up TV and advanced features (such as start-over, recording in the cloud), and a wide choice of movies, series and premium content.

Molotov's application for XBOX is also part of the turnkey, white-label OTT platform available to customers of Molotov Solutions, the B2B arm of Molotov.

"Molotov has a large number of gamers among its early adopters. We created the "Gamer Zone" offer for them just over a year ago. And today we are happy to meet the expectations of all those who want to find us on their Xbox to make the most of the gaming console's multimedia capabilities", said Olivier Kouvarakis, CMO of Molotov

Paris, 13th January 2021

In just 4 years, Molotov has attracted 13.2 million users in France and brought together nearly 180 publishers and services on its platform.

As a reminder, Molotov offers consumers an easy way to navigate through the content and services of publishers and channels on a single platform, accessible from all devices with a simple and intuitive interface, and a single subscription system.

While the number of channels and streaming services is multiplying exponentially around the world, it has become very complicated for users to find their way outside the major market players. With so many choices of niche or mainstream programs, live or on-demand content, Molotov addresses a clear need for simplification at a time of global shift into the OTT era.

The launch of Molotov outside the borders of its native country marks a new milestone in the expansion of the platform, with the launch of regional versions in 7 new markets.

Côte d'Ivoire was launched 3 weeks ago and already aggregates tens of thousands of paying subscribers. Senegal will follow this month, Cameroon in February, Burkina Faso in March, Tunisia in April, and Guinea and the Democratic Republic of Congo, before a global rollout in the rest of French-speaking Africa countries in the course of the semester.

Elsewhere, especially in Europe, South America and Asia, discussions are underway with local partners to launch regional versions of Molotov. The objective is to rapidly deploy the platform and the brand around the world, primarily in the EMEA zone.

Molotov’s international expansion is enabled by its technology, know-how, and capacity for innovation. During 2020, Molotov has gradually reorganized its infrastructure in order to address the complexity of globally delivering high quality live and on-demand video streams.

For Africa, which is mainly equipped with smartphones and tablets, Molotov has optimized its applications to take into account regional specificities (low bandrates, unstable connections, low-performance terminals). The monetization of paid offers relies on payment solutions provided by Digital Virgo and in particular its no credit card needed, per day payment system, provided directly by local mobile operators. Digital Virgo, a global provider of monetization solutions operating in more than 40 countries with 120 telco partners, brings its expertise in African markets and local marketing to this partnership, thanks to its local branches and its 130 employees on the continent.

At launch in the new markets, the line up consists of fifteen local linear channels, catch-up and on-demand content. Agreements with regional publishers have been reached in order to provide 30 channels by spring 2021.

Mango (the free ad supported video-on-demand service (AVoD) launched by Molotov in France last November) will enrich those services with hundreds of films, documentaries, tv shows and kid’s content.

"The international launch of Molotov represents an exciting new milestone expanding our platform and brand throughout the world." says JeanDavid Blanc, founder and CEO of Molotov. "Our mission is simple: to create the easiest way for viewers to find the content they love through an intuitive service and platform. Molotov not only helps viewers discover new content, but also provides publishers, channels and SVoD services the ability to be easily discovered and more frequently used."

"Molotov’s ability to attract international partners is a great recognition for our brand and our French team’s capacity to grow one of the most acclaimed OTT platforms" adds François le Pichon, in charge of Molotov Solutions and International Development.

"The partnership with Molotov allows us to deploy a service with very high added value on the African market. Cloud TV offers growth potential to all players in the content ecosystem, from producer to publisher via telecom operators. But the key element of success is, without a doubt, adaptation to local specificities. This is where we intervene by integrating our payment platform, our ability to integrate local content, adapt technology and launch effective marketing campaigns." says Vincent Taradel, Marketing Director of Digital Virgo.

Molotov announces today the launch of Mango, an ad-supported free offer of movies, documentaries, TV shows and content for kids.

In a context of a tremendous boom in OTT usage in France, and a landscape already cluttered by numerous paid offers (SVoD), the french streaming platform launches a free alternative for its 13M users. Molotov is opening its platform to content providers wishing to monetize their content through advertising, therefore offering that content for free to the public.

More than 1,000 programs are available at launch, mainly films (action, comedy, romance, fantasy, drama, youth films), historical or scientific documentaries, and cartoons, renewed weekly. Eventually, thousands of films and programs will be available on demand for free, aggregated on the platform under the brand Mango.

About ten agreements have already been signed with content providers such as Kabillion, Zylo, ACI, FIP, ZED, Ampersand, Sonar, ITV, Mediawan, Trade Media & Dynamic, Crome Films, and discussions are underway with Sony Pictures, Endemol, Lionsgate, Wild Bunch...

Molotov has been working actively on Mango for almost a year, creating in house:

  • a dedicated sales team structured around two divisions:
    • Media agencies and advertisers, headed by Béatrice Leroux-Barraux, former Sales Director at TF1 Publicité and Managing Director at NRJ Group's sales house.
    • Entertainment advertisers (cinema, streaming platforms, live shows), headed by Sophie Alliel, former CEO of Talent Group.
  • ad-serving, data and technological solutions: Molotov has developed its own smart ad-serving solution, combined with Freewheel and Ad Insertion Platform services to offer a high-performance and optimal advertising experience.
  • an Acquisition & Publishing team in relation with publishers and content providers

Ad-supported video-on-demand (AVod) is the spearhead of new platforms in the U.S., where the watch-time spent by users is now greater than on SVoD* platforms. According to Digital TV Research, the AVod market generated revenues of $27 billion in 2019 and could reach $56 billion in 2024 worldwide.

Molotov, which is now considered as a marketplace, adds advertising revenues to its subscription revenue model and offers the opportunity to content providers to diversify their revenue streams. Molotov is offering a real revolution to the French audience as well as to publishers and content providers, providing them with new opportunities to distribute and monetize their content to its 13 million users.

The platform will also host AVoD contents from other publishers, as it already does with the distribution of France’s major historical TV channels.

For JeanDavid Blanc (CEO and founder of Molotov) : "It was logical for Molotov to introduce in France the AVoD model. Mango embodies Molotov's philosophy and mission: offering programs accessible to all, both free and paid with the best user experience, while providing publishers and content providers with a complementary and solid revenue model".

Molotov today:

  • More than 170 channels and content providers distributed on the platform
  • A free offer giving access to 34 channels, including all DTT (27 channels), as well as Mango’s VOD
  • Paid options including Molotov Plus, Molotov Extended, OCS, Ciné+, AdultSwim, Spicee, the African and Maghreb thematic packages, the NFL Game Pass, the Gamer Zone pack, Schoolmouv...
  • User-friendly ergonomics, unique features such as cloud storage for recording, and a multi-award-winning application
  • Nearly 13 million users as of Nov 2020.

Paris, 6th November 2020

Molotov launches Molotov Source TV, a service allowing users to watch linear TV, Replay and on-demand programs on their Panasonic smart TV, without any third party set-top-box or antenna. The Molotov and Panasonic partnership spearheads something of a revolution in France: wireless TV, wifi only.

Molotov Source TV is revolutionizing the TV customer experience by acting as a virtual set-top-box on Panasonic smart TVs: the TV set-top-box, and both the DTT and satellite antenna is useless, as Molotov becomes the TV provider directly integrated into the TV set without any third party material or additional costs.

Launched in November 2018 as an “over-the-top (internet) application” on Panasonic smart TVs, Molotov is available since September 2020 as an “operator application” on Panasonic 2020 mid- and high-end Smart TVs. The 2021 and next ranges will also benefit from this innovation.

Based on a deep integration of the platform into the TV set, the Molotov Source TV service delivers an experience similar to the operator set-top-box’s one. The experience is even enhanced by Molotov’s advanced features such as live control and DVR in the Cloud.

Molotov Source TV allows :

  • To enjoy the Molotov interface as a TV source on the TV: when the user turns the TV off and on again, he remains into the Molotov interface.
  • To benefit from the wide variety of films, series and tv shows available on the platform (Live, Replay and “On Demand”), thus approximately 30,000 hours of programs accessible anytime.
  • To control Molotov directly with the Panasonic remote control, each button being linked to a function specific to Molotov (launch a recording, display programs, set up subtitles...).
  • To switch from one device to another: start on a smartphone, keep watching on the TV, even for a live program that you'll pick up where you left off.

To install this service, the user selects Molotov as the TV source when setting up the TV set (IPTV category), or later from the applications store and the Panasonic launcher. Access to Molotov is free and options can be added (the free version gives access to 34 channels including all DTT, options detailed below).

With this new service, Molotov is shaping the future of television: cordless TV access allows you to install your TV wherever you want in the house, without worrying about extra antenna cables or boxes, or having to handle multiple remote controls.

Molotov Source TV on Panasonic Smart TVs is :

  • More than 170 free and paid channels directly on the TV set.
  • Savings: free access, no TV box rental fees.
  • Less cables,
  • No TV set-top-box
  • Only one remote control
  • Always the possibility to switch to the applications available on the Panasonic Store
  • All your TV on all your TV sets at home, at no extra charge

“We are very pleased to innovate with Panasonic to launch what will be tomorrow’s TV access. With Molotov Source TV, Molotov integrates itself into the heart of Smart TVs and allows viewers to free themselves from TV boxes” says Olivier Kouvarakis, CMO of Molotov.

“Panasonic is proud to partner with Molotov to revolutionize the customer experience on its TVs. This new service offers multiple functions and allows consumers to install their TV wherever they want thanks to the absence of additional antenna cables and boxes. We are convinced that this service will provide them with a unique user experience,” said Romain Chollet, Marketing and Communication Director of Panasonic France-Belux.

Paris, 16th April 2020

At a time when more than 12 million students are effectively being homeschooled, Molotov has mobilized to launch in record time "Molotov pour l’Ecole" (Molotov for School), a new category dedicated to school students accessible on Molotov. Television channels offer many programs such as news and information shows, documentaries, and movies which illustrate school curricula in an effective and entertaining way.

Molotov pour l'Ecole aims at enriching our children’s learning by bringing together all relevant television programs seamlessly organized by grade (K through 12) and by theme (personalities, historical events, science...), thus transforming television into a real and user-friendly educational tool.

Molotov completes that offering with audiovisual courses for secondary school students produced by the Toulouse-based start-up SchoolMouv, one of France’s leading online platforms dedicated to student help.

Molotov pour l’Ecole consists of:

  • for kindergarten and primary school children: edutainment programs, reports and documentaries
  • for secondary school students: edutainment shows, documentaries and reports, as well as close to 1.000 courses from 6th to 12th grade, designed by professional National Education teachers in all the main subjects and in accordance with official programs
  • Documentaries for School: hundreds of documentaries on history, outstanding personalities, science, nature, geography, etc... relating to the topics covered at school
  • Cinema for School: cinema films selected because they illustrate the school programs

Molotov pour l’Ecole is free. The 1,000 courses (worth 19.99€ /month) will be available free of charge until May 15th (date supposed to be the end of confinement for students in France), so that all students can benefit from the service until the schools reopen. Content from pay channels is available via subscription at the channels’ rate (most often with one month free).

For JeanDavid Blanc, founder and President of Molotov: « From Molotov's origins, we wanted to show pupils and students the richness of television when viewed through the prism of school curricula. We are very pleased to complete this offer with the extremely high quality content from SchoolMouv. It is not a question here of replacing the lessons and the assignments entrusted to the pupils by their teachers, but of completing and illustrating them pleasantly. »

For Shannon Picardo, founder and CEO of SchoolMouv, « At SchoolMouv we have been working to democratize academic support for a long time. This initiative shows once again that the entrepreneurial world can mobilize quickly during an unprecedented period to support parents, students and teachers. We are very proud to launch this channel with Molotov, hoping that it will serve as many learners as possible. »

This initiative is supported by numerous partners, including Mediawan with the « Sciences et Vie TV » and « Toute l’Histoire » channels, Purebreak (Webedia Group), L'Étudiant, Teads, Klassroom (the ideal parent-teacher communication app for pedagogical continuity), Bayard Press with the Okapi and Phosphore magazines, TCL and Nice Matin.

About SchoolMouv

SchoolMouv was founded in 2015 with a clear ambition: to democratize educational support by making it accessible to all families and by offering an innovative format adapted to middle and high school students. A pioneer of EdTech, SchoolMouv is the first 100% online pedagogical support site that offers video lessons, chat between teachers and students, and content covering the entire curriculum from 6th to 12th grade. SchoolMouv is used by 35,000 teachers, more than 200 of whom participate in building the content. Today, the platform supports more than 2 million students in France and enables them to gain 3.2 points in their overall average.

Paris, January 30th 2018

Molotov has started a revolution in France. In july 2016, the French discover a new OTT platform that shows the incredible wealth of the TV offer. In less than a year, a million of people have a Molotov account (april 2017). 18 months after its start, more than 4 million French are watching TV with Molotov.

Applauded for its simplicity of use and its ground-breaking interface, in France, Molotov has become the way to watch TV with 2 million monthly and 500 000 daily users. With a 20% monthly growth, Molotov now aims to triple its audience over the coming 18 months.

A TV complementary audience

Molotov reconnects an audience that traditional TV had feared lost: people below the age of 51 (average age of French TV watcher). Molotov’s audience is on average 35 year young and attracted to the platform primarily via social media.

Thanks to Molotov countless innovative features, users are free to enjoy the full range of live, free and premium TV content and do so across all devices, linear or recorded in the cloud. This audience reconquest is positioning Molotov as a strategically important partner for broadcasters. Designed to bring together linear and non-linear content consumption in a seamless fashion, Molotov is based on TV channels’ editorial make up. It enhances the channels’ editorial proposition, extends its attraction across different time windows (e.g. catch up, recording in the cloud, start-over, time shifting, etc.)

New frontiers

Molotov is well positioned to achieve European OTT presence and leadership. This year, Molotov will announce its first expansion outside France.

In addition, Molotov is ready for the new European portability offering. Starting march 20th, the Molotov users will be able to travel in Europe and get full access to French TV content. This territorial expansion will be available for premium subscribers travelling within Europe.

For JeanDavid Blanc, Molotov’s CEO :
Molotov is achieving rapid and exciting growth in France. On busy nights, our viewers now add up to 5% of the French TV audience - only a year and a half after we launched. In 2018, Molotov will keep adding premium content to its offer and continue to develop innovative features to make people rediscover TV.
