C'est à l'âge de 13 ans, en 1939, que Miles Davis se voit offrir une trompette par son père. Cinq ans plus tard, il est déjà sur scène. Dans les pas de ses idoles prophètes du be-bop, Charlie Parker et Dizzy Gillespie, le prodige plonge bientôt dans l'incandescence de la 52e rue à New York, laboratoire du jazz moderne. Son style unique, Davis le grave dans l'album iconique "Birth of the Cool" en 1949.
